Usually, announcements like these piss me off to the core, especially when publishers are trying to hit gamers up for more bread right after they spent 60 bucks on the title alone. You may not recognize the name Katsuya Eguchi, but without him video games wouldn't be as they are today. The man has been helping Nintendo release hit after hit since 1988. Katsuya began working for the company two years earlier as a promotional artist. Afterwards, he was a member of the design team for hits like Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World and Yoshi's Story. He made his directorial debut with Star Fox and has been the director and producer for additional big name titles. Katsuya's recent projects include Nintendo Land and Animal Crossing: New Leaf. He is the senior producer of Software Development Group No. 2 in the Nintendo Entertainment Analysis and Development division. I will immediately state that I'm not pointing a finger at Rockstar saying they copied another game. In this industry, like any art, learning from others goes a long way. Rockstar has always been able to craft exceptional games -- just look at the most recent years of success with GTAV Online or any of the GTAs. What has Rockstar learned? From the looks of it, that it’s possible to create epic playscapes representative of our real world that will be fun to play in without fantasy or sci-fi. It has gotten a bit tedious that every game that’s willing to put out these massive sandboxes restricts it to stories of fiction, except Rockstar of course. Covering a bit more ground, the upcoming Assassin’s Creed is also helping fill this much-needed role for games.
This is where it will be interesting to see if Rockstar has learned from games like The Witcher. RDRII could showcase mature tales that not only make for interesting stories but also allow the player to forget they are doing a side-quest, instead getting lost in the game's world. This doesn’t look to be a problem though, with heavy emphasis on the wide range of a cast seen throughout the trailer even if just the tip of the iceberg. Like GTAV, RDRII is giving its audience a living breathing world, that famous — when this is off the world keeps going — mentality.
Not to be outdone by Microsoft, Sony made their huge announcement only four days after the Xbox 360 was revealed. It all went down at E3 2005 when Sony announced plans for their latest system, the PlayStation 3. During the conference, the console was shown with a boomerang controller which was later modified. There was no actual gameplay footage of its titles but pre-rendered videos of Final Fantasy VII and Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. The prototype of the system was priced between $500 and $600 USD. More information and demos were revealed months later at the Tokyo Game Show. PlayStation 3 didn't launch for another year, but when it did, every single gamer automatically picked sides between the seventh generation console war.
