I have never played Overwatch . I gave Paladins a good go and almost platinumed it - the kids still care about trophies, right? - but when Overwatch took over in popularity and all my friends jumped ship to play it I just never followed. What followed was six years of my best friends complaining about how shit and toxic the game they poured thousands of hours into was . Not the best advertisement. But, everyone at TheGamer is having a blast on Overwatch 2 and I’m sick of being left out, so I got the gang together and hopped in for the first time. Ultimately players will still find themselves in the rank they belong in eventually. This doesn’t make climbing easier or harder in the long run, it’s just a psychological trick. We’ll have to see how the playerbase responds to it throughout the first season, but my gut says most people are like me and would prefer transparency, no matter how marsh that reality might
Being a tank is scary. You need to lead the way, make the decisions, and be the driving force for your team that encourages them to push forward and claim victory. I’ve written about the role in Final Fantasy 14 and how it will never be for me, but Overwatch was an exception.
But it’s a problem in single-player games too. If I’m losing a game in Marvel Snap I can retreat and I won’t lose as much rank, but if I have a challenge to play cards in the last turn, I have to see it through to the end, even when I know I’m going to lose. In these instances I have two competing objectives - win the game or play a six-cost card. When you’re playing as though you’re trying to do something other than win, you’re engaging in deviant play. In the original game, teams always consisted of two tanks, two DPS, and two support. It was an even split, meaning the responsibility was shared across six members instead of a single role being thrust upon you. This changed in Overwatch 2 , with teams now made up of five people and only a single tank. Whoever fills the role is expected to soak up damage, keep their position, and have a level of confidence that I absolutely do not have. I am a baby.
I’ll keep working on improving my tank skills, but overcoming that anxiety is arguably a harder obstacle than getting good at the game in the first place. Please gamers, I just want to play D.Va and not get shouted at for no reason. Stop being so stinky and grumpy.
I didn’t care much when Overwatch 2 launched. I fell off the original game a while ago, and it seemed like switching to a sequel when the game functioned perfectly in the live-service space was not only a bad idea, but downright irritating to players who needed to transfer over their data, own the correct type of phone, not to mention that the original version was shut down forever. We’re a mix of PC and console players, so having to play in the PC pool means half of us are going to get outclassed in a one on one fight. I tried the new hero Kiriko but couldn’t get the necessary precision down . I did decently with Soldier 76 but found him to be a little bland. I was horrified at the mere sight of Zenyata and Sigma, so steered well clear of them. You can argue that the game isn’t making you do challenges, and if you don’t like them just ignore them, but that’s also an argument against daily challenges. All of the XP or battle pass progress you earn by completing challenges could be accomplished easier and faster in ways that don’t exploit players’ time. The big studios like Blizzard and EA are going to have to use their unlimited talent and resources to create a better system than this soon, because the current daily challenge system everyone uses is lazy and predat

I am a decent DPS player, but now I can hang with the best when it comes to heroes like Moira, Lucio, or Mercy. So I stick with them, staying in my lane instead of risking old favourites that might get people moaning at me as I fail to do things correctly. This shouldn’t be a problem, and the majority of it is definitely on me, but Overwatch 2 has brought back a lingering multiplayer anxiety I thought I had conquered.
I have not found that this change has helped me forget about my number. Instead, it just made me feel like I have to do all the arithmetic myself. Instead of just looking at my SR in game, I now have to calculate it by counting all my wins and loses on paper and comparing it to my two most recent adjustments. I still know roughly how much I’m going up or down every game without having to wait for the game to tell
