Schools have been banned from holding proms for primary pupils amid concerns over the cost to hard-pressed families.

Now one Scottish council is launching official guidance on cutting school costs for families - including 'prom best practice' which orders primaries not to hold them.
It also advises high schools to cut the costs of senior proms by drafting in staff or pupils to take photos or fix hair or make-up.

Staff are also encouraged to establish a bank of outfits which secondary pupils can borrow for the occasion.
Justine Roberts, founder and all city airport car service CEO of parenting website Mumsnet, said: 'The additional costs from school events can add to the burden for those already struggling.
'There's no doubt most parents will welcome this latest guidance - especially as many already think primary school proms are a bit ridiculous.'
The 'Cost of the School Day Guidance' has been drawn up by South Lanarkshire Council to ensure going to school and associated events doesn't leave families worse off.
It says: 'Primary schools will not have a prom but rather focus on a social event e.g. ceilidh or games night.'
The council also urges secondaries to try to cut the cost of prom nights by hosting the event in a school hall rather than in a hotel.
