Destiny 2 is laying the groundwork for outstanding storytelling and unforgettable moments. It's setting a solid foundation for the game it always wanted to be, while delivering the things Destiny never could. It’s an exciting time to be a Guardian even if it means the Last City falling only to pick ourselves up one more time. At least this time, there are those worth fighting for.
The European Dead Zone is the most impressive open area Destiny has ever had. It’s expansive, beautiful to travel through, and filled with entertaining activities like Public Events and Adventures. Unfortunately, Patrols remain basic, and Devrim Kay doesn’t entirely solve the traveling back and forth between open areas and social space problem. Still, the EDZ is a massive improvement over what came before, and hopefully, the rest of the open areas can deliver a similar experience to the EDZ.
Not yet, but I promise that I will talk to you all about when it will happen as soon as we nail that down. It will happen this summer, obviously, and then on September 8 Destiny 2 will be available on PS4 and Xbox One. We’ll solidify and announce the PC ship date when we have it ready.
I wasn't a huge fan of any of the guns in the Destiny 2 Beta, although I'm usually picky and stick with the ones I really like, but they do seem different and cater to different needs. You're also given a lot of options in the Beta which is nice, including the ability to test out all of the different kinds of guns. They've changed the organization of guns as well, and I'm not too much of a fan, although I could see it working once you have a whole host of guns to choose from. Instead of Primary, Secondary, and Heavy, it's Kinetic, Energy, and Power. Heavy and Power are synonymous, while Kinetic means regular weapons with no energy ability attached and Energy simply means that they do. Energies, remember, are the Solar, Void and Arc powers that a pvp weapon perks might come with. So now, if one is Kinetic and one is Energy, you could have two assault rifles, two hand cannons or any mix of what we think of now as Primary and Secondary weapons in those slots. What I ended up using, though, was a sidearm in the Kinetic slot and an assault rifle in the Energy slot, which meant I spawned with the sidearm, which was weird. It's different, but I think that when I actually start using it it will make more sense.
Many familiar faces filled the screen as the hour of Destiny 2 played out, characters any player could recognize (Holiday did look slick flying that ship.) Destiny 2 means introducing new faces to the fold, folks that may have been there the whole time, but Guardians were to busy running around the galaxy to pay attention too. At least, that’s what I like to think. Getting down on the people's level though, actually coming down from their Tower, Guardians will hopefully see firsthand the struggles that the Last City had to go through on a daily basis. New places and new faces means new content. Guardians always had a pretentiousness about them. I enjoyed my Guardian, but it felt like we were all on a high horse policing the universe without a care for those we were actually supposed to be protecting. This isn’t a new concept, though, even having been written into the lore. It's known that children are told stories at night about Guardians to frighten them. Protectors or a something worse? Guardians are undead soldiers after all, Zavalas haunting speech while returning over and over again, shook me. My guardian has done this exact thing, but actually seeing the impact and hearing how twisted it sounded made me feel like one of the children that lives in the Last City.
Going deeper into the earth, we finally found what the Red Legion was searching for, Protheon, the Modular Mind. This giant bipedal Vex machine was the final boss and he was quite the challenge. All his attacks caused splash damage and a single stomp was enough to snuff out a Guardian. While he was quite the bullet sponge, Bungie did make it interesting by constantly changing the arena. A multi-tiered boss, Protheon would destroy the arena, sending us falling down to a new one. Each arena had its own little quirk. The second had a burning effect every now and again that would drain health. The third was surrounded by a lake of a milky white substance that would birth Vex grunts. It’s was an exciting boss battle that was more entertaining and engaging than anything in vanilla Destiny.
There's a lot going on in this Beta, even though it's relatively small with not a lot to do. The changes so far are mostly positive, showing promise for the real thing. Destiny 2 comes to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on September 6 and then to PC on October 24, so there's not much time left.
But anyway, the Inverted Spire is all about putting a stop to Protheon, the Modular Mind. To get to him, you'll have to fight through hoards of Vex and Cabal who are also fighting each other. They take you down into a dig site, where the Cabal have been looking for Protheon. It's pretty straight forward, but there are some cool set pieces, like the dig site itself, which has you dodging huge drills as you descend, and Protheon's temple, which changes as the fight goes on.
