See, Mario and Sonic weren't mascots because they fulfilled a certain percentage of demographic requirements or someone felt they could best be easily packed into a happy meal, but rather because they clearly represented exactly what you got with the product their faces were associated with. If you bought Sega, you got Sonic games. If you went Nintendo, Mario was your man.

person holding black smartphone taking picture of white powder(thinks for a few seconds) If I suck at sandbox and building games, would I still be able to play this? Like traditional Dragon Quest games, anyone can pick up and play this. Dragon Quest Builders includes blue prints that will instruct the player on how to build certain structures. You are of course free to deviate from them as much as you want but for people who want to quickly build a structure we included them to facilitate faster gameplay and progress if someone wants to use them. (Here I am shown some screenshots from a phone that include a ridiculously huge and impressive kingdom, the amusement park, a giant gold slime, and even a replica of a screen shot of the battle with Gilgamesh from Final Fantasy V) All of these are screenshots from Dragon Quest builders. If you can imagine it, you can build it. There are some people in Japan who have spent excess of fifty days constructing magnificent kingdoms strictly from their own imagination. Even people who are not fans of traditional Dragon Quest games can enjoy this so I hope a lot of people give it a shot when it comes out next month.

In a way its reminiscent of the film industry in the '90s, when guys like Quentin Tarantino were causing as much buzz as names like Steven Spielberg, and for reference a fraction of the cost. It was a time when film studios were snatching up every indie film they could get, while others like Miramax were becoming among the most successful around for being known as the home of daring new independent films that not only excited audiences with their infinite artistic possibilities, but equally thrilled their producers with insane profit margins.

When there's a lot of stress or anxiety in the world, it's nice to take a step back and relax. Animal Crossing is a game that does this well while alone or even better when hanging out with friends. It's hard to find a title where doing next to nothing can feel rewarding, but in Animal Crossing just running around with friends feels like a fun time. There's a sense of companionship when sharing items or fruit and rivalry when catching bugs or fish. The core of Animal Crossing's entire identity is community, sharing interests and differences. New Horizons has players starting from nearly nothing and building their own world along the way. Eventually players can show off their hard work with a fully decorated house or a fantastic visit to the museum. Even just sitting down to take a picture together with silly expressions gives that relief that it's alright to take a break without thinking too hard now and then. Not even a wasp sting can hurt long when a friend is there to give some medicine or at least laugh over how ridiculous it was.

There is no new game plus but there is a separate free build mode. Story progression unlocks items in free build mode, and free build mode allows the player to build without limits. Things the player constructs in free build mode can be sent to other players. Free build mode does online connectivity but it is single player only, aside from being able to share items and buildings. It is possible to call for help from other players in this mode. For example, someone was involved with a 24 hour stream and wanted to build an amusement park and requested help through the Dragon Quest Builders social networking channel to get help from other players. Someone built a Ferris wheel, someone else built concessions, and the amusement park was able to get completed quickly since other people were contributing their creations. (noticing the suite is getting packed up for the night and other media people are leaving)

The episode relies prettily on QTE (Quick Time Events) and gives you something next to decision making to worry about. While a lot of the QTE are really to avoid taking damage, some are just used for the sake of being there, like to build things, but they also add to your situation and count as something else to watch out for. You are given a set of ten hearts to have throughout the episode (and most likely throughout the series) and damage gets taken away every time you are either attacked by an enemy or fail to do a QTE. The QTE also acts as its own decision as some events can change how a person sees you. It isn't as effective as a regular decision, but something like which group of people you want to run with or how long it takes you to do something might have a much more of an impact in the future.

The episode doesn't stop there, because once you've returned from either of those two paths, you head off as a group with whichever other character you picked up in the first episode (Lukas for me) to find the last member of the Order of the Stone, Soren the Architect. This path also follows a relatively fast-paced action sequence, but falls a little short with its sub-par cliffhanger. It's only episode two, but the weird events surrounding the Order of the Stone and exactly what they're going to do to stop this crazy Wither Storm seems as though it will never be resolved.
