We’re all familiar with the standard demo format: you play a section of a game (almost always the tutorial up until just before the first boss), and then everything comes to an abrupt halt while a screen either asks you to unlock the full game to continue, or tells you when it’s coming out. If you’re very lucky (as in the case of most Devil May Cry demos) you’ll get to play through a level and fight a boss out of context. This might convince you to get the full game, or Minecraft-Inspired PokéMon tide you over until a game you’ve been waiting for has been released, but either way, it’s almost always stuff you’ll have to redo once the game proper begins.

The only rules here are the game can't be a shooter (obviously) and have to be on a current gen system, or be a PC game released roughly between 2006 and 2013. That type of timeframe means a lot of great had to be cut and, to help make those decisions, I really tried to focus on games that provided a multiplayer experience you couldn't get prior to this generation. However, some exceptions do apply.

ZlUe7.jpgFrom the same people that brought us Game of Thrones and Tales From the Borderlands comes their newest decision based game, Minecraft: Story Mode. Telltale Games is notorious for their rigorous storytelling and memorable characters and this time is no different. You play as Jesse, regardless of which gender you choose at the beginning, who is on a mission to create the greatest build at EnderCon, (Enderman Convention if you didn't catch on). The winner gets to meet the great Gabriel of the Order of the Stone, a group of people who slayed the Ender Dragon years ago but have disbanded since. Of course, the episode would be nothing without some kind of story of revenge that spirals the characters into an adventure that they would have never seen themselves in. Someone sets out to create a Wither, a huge monster that sets out to consume everything, leaving you and your friends to seek out the Order of the Stone. You are accompanied by your friends Olivia, confidant and trusty, Axel, large and loyal, and Reuben, a pig. Telltale hit the nail on the head this time with a different, family-friendly take on one of their main installments. No prior knowledge of the original building game is needed, but it would help if you had some basic terminology.

The desert biome in Minecraft is usually not the most popular choice for players to build in, but it can be a good place to start for giant builds due to the amount of flat surface. There's also no clearing needed when it comes to trees and shr

Let me begin by saying that this episode is particularly short, like a little over an hour short. I guess that's what happens when the first two episodes are only separated by a few weeks, but the fact that to get the entire experience you have to play through it twice sort of pans out well because it then makes the episode about two hours long. Still, a much longer playthrough for the sequel was expected considering the complication of the events taking place. That being said, the episode covers the areas following either Elligaard or Magnus and each path allows you to follow and understand more of the world of Minecraft. There are a few inconsistencies that don't make sense and some new events that don't necessarily pertain to Jessie or his/her friends, but that doesn't label the episode as terrible. By inconsistencies, I mean there were points in the game where I thought, "why can't they just do this/that in order to progress?" One moment that comes to mind is when a character falls into a hole and can't seem to get out when they could have built their way out as they were able to in the first episode. The rest of the episode is littered with little things like that that make you scratch your head and ask those questions.

What? A game from the music genre is number one? Didn't everybody stop caring about those years ago and only think of them when they stumble upon a plastic instrument somewhere in the back of their closet? Yes, that's very true, but I find that as the years go on, I look at the music genre more and more fondly, and miss it's contributions and capabilities.

Minecraft: Story Mode strays from the more mature content that Telltale normally associates themselves with and manages to create a fun, family-friendly world for one with no real story. The episode is expertly done and gives players a perfect standalone game to the critically acclaimed game from Mojang. With the new lore introduced in the first episode, it's hard to believe what other new content will be available to us in the coming episodes. By focusing on a new concept that strays from their normally mature games, this episode paves the way for what is hopefully a great series from a great developer.

Updated on March 20, 2025, by Mati Kent-Nye: 14 years after its release, Minecraft continues to be updated regularly, bringing with it countless new blocks to build with and biomes to build in, whether on land, underground, or at sea. Its creative limits are constantly expanding, drawing in beginner and veteran builders alike. The most recent 1.21 update gifted players with an array of new copper blocks, opening up a whole new world of mechanical-themed builds. A new material mechanic, oxidization, was also introduced. Unless waxed, copper blocks will slowly change color from bronze to teal. They can also be waxed in their semi-oxidized state, making for versatile bui
