Wii Sports may be good enough for Grandma to play as advertised, but what's most amazing about is not it's ability to ensnare the leisure time of the elderly, but rather how it created an experience that can be enjoyed on an equal level amongst all who play it.

The lore also does not seem to be empty at all. In some games, you walk away feeling like you could have lived your whole life not needing to know anything about what just happened. This game, and specifically this episode, doesn't feel that way and makes sure to utilize all the time in the episode to prove that. Nothing goes unnoticed and everything is important whether it be information that pertains to this game specifically or the base game. Battles are not too long-winded and conversations don't make you want to skip them. Everything feels as though they are timed just right and you almost forget that you are sitting in front of your television for so long. You don't really think about what could have happened if you did or said something differently and only look forward to seeing what comes of the decision you've just made, which is odd for a game that is meant to be replayed in order to make different decisions. Besides, there are some things that you wouldn't want to see happen again and are better off just forgetting all of the decisions that you didn't make.

The Classic Control is what you'd normally put up with in a standard FPS, where head movement moves the view and body orientation is controlled smoothly by the right stick or mouse. This is the heart of the VR FPS problem, because while moving forward, back, and strafing isn't much of an issue, turning the view without moving your body is when bad things start to happen at the base of your lizard brain. Even in a blocky Minecraft world the sense of Real is too strong, and while you know you're playing a game the part that keeps things like your heart pumping and lungs breathing without conscious thought hasn't the slightest idea what's wrong. The trick is to break the idea of Real, and this is where the special VR Control mode comes into play.

The episode relies prettily on QTE (Quick Time Events) and gives you something next to decision making to worry about. While a lot of the QTE are really to avoid taking damage, some are just used for the sake of being there, like to build things, but they also add to your situation and count as something else to watch out for. You are given a set of ten hearts to have throughout the episode (and most likely throughout the series) and damage gets taken away every time you are either attacked by an enemy or fail to do a QTE. The QTE also acts as its own decision as some events can change how a person sees you. It isn't as effective as a regular decision, but something like which group of people you want to run with or how long it takes you to do something might have a much more of an impact in the future.

vintage_ice_skates_on_a_wooden_sled_6-10(thinks for a few seconds) If I suck at sandbox and building games, would I still be able to play this? Like traditional Dragon Quest games, anyone can pick up and play this. Dragon Quest Builders includes blue prints that will instruct the player on how to build certain structures. You are of course free to deviate from them as much as you want but for people who want to quickly build a structure we included them to facilitate faster gameplay and progress if someone wants to use them. (Here I am shown some screenshots from a phone that include a ridiculously huge and impressive kingdom, the amusement park, a giant gold slime, and even a replica of a screen shot of the battle with Gilgamesh from Final Fantasy farm animals V) All of these are screenshots from Dragon Quest builders. If you can imagine it, you can build it. There are some people in Japan who have spent excess of fifty days constructing magnificent kingdoms strictly from their own imagination. Even people who are not fans of traditional Dragon Quest games can enjoy this so I hope a lot of people give it a shot when it comes out next month.

The are two reasons getting this right is important, and both reasons are the same but viewed from different perspectives- Minecraft is still the biggest game in the world. The official VR mode is exclusive to the Rift, so you can bet that Microsoft/Mojang and Oculus worked together to make sure the experience is as inviting as possible. Getting this right is a major deal for both companies. This ties in to the other perspective, which is consumer-side. For a lot of people Minecraft will be a premier game for VR, and how accessible it is will become the baseline expectation of the experience. Make it nice and maybe it becomes the VR gateway drug, and at the moment the experience is acceptable. The default starting view may be the same Minecraft as always on an in-game screen, and Classic Control has high nausea potential, but the jerky VR Control is the kind of thing you learn to tolerate simply because it's effective.

Having been introduced to the world of Dragon Quest when Nintendo Power included the NES copy of Dragon Warrior with a subscription, it should surprise no one that one of the upcoming games I am anticipating is Dragon Quest Builders. Taking gameplay elements from Minecraft and mixing them with story driven adventure led to the creation of a unique experience within the world of Dragon Quest. After spending some time playing the demo, I sat down with producer Noriyoshi Fujimoto to discuss the upcoming game. In addition to learning about Dragon Quest Builders, I also learned that Mr. Fujimoto and I share a common love of inflicting unspeakable horrors unto The Sims.
