There are no new enemy species in Destiny 2. We still have the Fallen, Cabal, Vex and Hive, which are all returning from the Destiny 1 era. From a story perspective, how do you make enemies players have fought so many times over the past three years feel fresh?
Taking place on Nessus, one of the two new planets coming to Destiny 2, the strike in the Beta is called The Inverted Spire and focuses on a Vex mind that has been awoken by the Cabal. Nessus is a neat world that kind of combines the aesthetics of the Vex and the Cabal since it was originally a machine world of the Vex's that has been invaded by the Cabal. The planet itself also has a new look to it, with a muted gray landscape, but one with lush red trees everywhere. It's a really cool look that brings a new feel to the game.
There was no way a Persona game would slip past my radar. Shin Megami Tensei IV was easily my number one game last year, so it only seems fitting that another in the beloved franchise, while a spin-off, was among my top 10 in 2014. Persona Q is a fan’s dream, meshing both Persona 3 and Persona 4 into a traditional dungeon crawler format similar to that of Etrian Odyssey. While it’s not your traditional Persona format with fusing various monsters and dealing with social interactions outside of dungeons, it maintains all of the glamour and appeal. It definitely has its own set of issues, but there’s just too much to love about mashing the characters from the two games and building an intriguing storyline around them.
A new set of class specific abilities are being added as well. These abilities stay the same no matter which subclass you choose, and are generally meant to help your teammates. Titans can plant down a shield, Warlocks can cast an area of healing and Hunters get a dodge roll similar to the one that was part of the Nightstalker subclass. The first two are activated by holding down the circle or B button and the Hunter's roll is done by double tapping it. They are all a nice addition to each class' set of abilities and are super tactical. They were all incredibly useful in both PvE and PvP.
Placing all the powerful weapons in the same category has good potential for PvP, but it’s also a functional misstep in terms of PvE. Power weapon ammo drops more often in Destiny 2 than heavy weapon ammo in Destiny 1, but still not nearly as often as kinetic or energy weapon ammo. So right away there’s less incentive to use that ammo for any weapon other than a rocket or grenade launcher. Why waste that relatively rare and precious ammo on a sniper best linear Fusion rifle Destiny 2 when it could instead be spent on something much more powerful? It’s the same issue with abilities in that they’re all restricted by ridiculously-slow cooldowns. Instead of enjoying the ability to toss a grenade into a group of minor enemies, dodge around the battlefield at one’s leisure or even pop a super to take on a mid-boss, the game encourages players to bank them instead. To use one’s abilities in any situation other than the most desperate is to see them go to waste. Nobody wants to be caught staring at a cool-down meter when they’re stuck in a tight spot. These can at least be adjusted a bit with mods, but who wants to waste their mods on anything other than top-tier armor? The net result is gameplay that’s gone from fast-paced, fluid and fun, to something slow, limited and dull with no incentive whatsoever to make use of the game’s most enjoyable weapons and powers. If the developers truly felt that these changes were necessary to achieve a more fun and balanced Crucible, then perhaps it would have been better to just separate the Crucible from the rest of the game.
One of the biggest questions around Destiny 2 is if Activision and Bungie are doing enough to fix what is an extremely wonky machine, and if so, can it be saved? Destiny 2 does have a dedicated fan base, but even that has hit a low point compared to when Destiny found itself going through these same woes, just with less grief, which makes sense. Destiny isn't perfect and it came a long way from when it launched, but many of the problems in Destiny 2 didn't exist for Destiny. In many ways Destiny 2 felt like it had taken about a thousand steps back. Now Destiny 2 finds itself not only on the same trajectory as the original, but also with more patches and leaks to fix. The boat was sinking as soon as it hit water, it just took a little time at sea to see just how bad things were.
[MW]: We’re just aware of it as you are. It’s harder for us to tell a story, but it has it’s moments. There’s one part in the story where you’re told to speak and Ghost cuts you off. So, we have fun with that.
It looks like Bungie is also playing with the idea of setting up a more regular competitive scene. The most competitive Destiny game modes have been the Iron Banner and Trials of Osiris, which are both timed events. While this allows for an almost heightened sense of competitiveness during these times, it also sort of makes the down time less interesting, like it has smaller stakes. The Beta has two modes -- one called Quickplay, and one called Competitive. While it's not yet prevalent now how this will affect things, it sounds similar to Overwatch's system. It could mean that Destiny 2 will also have seasons, where you're ranked based on performance, which would be a great addition to the Crucible.
