Things are simple and easy to read, while updating character designs have been thrown onto each icon and pop with real visual flair. Each match was fast and rewarding, while its sprawling cast of heroes all connected with players and meant something to them. It was evolutionary, but this innovation would bring with it some irksome industry trends and a complacency that would see Blizzard transform into a company that is now widely despised. How things change.
In the absence of playing any actual games in Overwatch 2, I had a decent amount of fun staring at its menus as the search time for a match moved into the double digits. There was a weird smugness to seeing the years of work I put into the first entry immediately reflected in the updated client, which to me looks slicker and better presented than anything that came before it.
Fortunately, the hero gallery is still a breeze to navigate and has been updated with new portraits for each character. Actual models are used this time around instead of stylised drawings, and I’m still not entirely sure which of them I prefer. I’m sure they’ll grow on me.
Part of me is curious to see where new modes and additions will appear when the first big seasonal update rolls around, or if Blizzard has something more experimental planned for a hero shooter that is relatively by-the-numbers right now. But when it comes to the user interface experience, I gotta give this thing top marks.

I love this screen. It’s slick, colourful, and showcases how good I am at certain characters. I will say that I am not a Lucio main by choice, but largely because my team would be ruined without me healing their asses on a constant basis. All the usual customisation options for analysing your stats can be found here alongside statistics and challenges. It’s a shame that a lot of tasks have carried over from the first game instead of starting afresh, meaning your main source of progression this time around is the battle pass and not much else. The grim reality is that the entire reason Overwatch 2 exists is to change the way Blizzard makes money. All of the meta changes, like the battle pass, Coin system, and locking new players out of content until they grind enough, are designed to increase revenue and engagement metrics. I don’t think we should ignore that or give Blizzard a pass, and if that’s enough to get you to give up on Overwatch 2 I don’t blame you. As someone who still loves the game, I’m willing to accept fewer free rewards if it means more frequent updates and better events. It’s simply too soon to write it off for me.
